RLGL ("RedLight GreenLight," "we," "us," or "our") operates a music lesson marketplace connecting students with instructors. This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, disclose, and protect your personal information when you use our website, applications, and services (collectively, the "Platform"). By using RLGL, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
We collect information you provide directly, information generated through your use of the Platform, and information from third-party sources.
Information you provide:
Account information — Name, email address, phone number, password, profile photo, location, and timezone.
Profile information — Bio, headline, instruments, styles, teaching methods, techniques, musical influences, credentials, certifications, and links to external profiles.
Instructor application data — Musical background, teaching philosophy, years of experience, government-issued photo ID (for identity verification), and background check consent.
Media uploads — Profile photos, intro videos, video clips, audio tracks, and lesson recordings.
Communications — Messages between users, support tickets, and feedback submitted through the Platform.
Financial information — Payment method details (processed by our payment provider), payout preferences, and billing address.
Information collected automatically:
Usage data — Pages visited, features used, search queries, booking activity, lesson history, and interaction patterns.
Device information — Browser type, operating system, device identifiers, IP address, and language preferences.
Location data — Approximate location derived from IP address, and timezone settings you provide.
Information from third parties:
Social login providers — If you sign up via Google, Apple, Facebook, or Discord, we receive your name, email, and profile image from that service.
Background check providers — For instructors, identity and criminal background verification results (pass/fail status only — we do not store raw background check data).
Payment processors — Transaction confirmations, dispute notifications, and fraud signals.

How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
Operate the Platform — Create accounts, display profiles, match students with instructors, process bookings, and facilitate lessons.
Process payments — Charge students for lessons, pay instructors, issue refunds, and manage billing.
Verify identity and trust — Confirm instructor identities, process background checks, review applications, and prevent fraud.
Communicate with you — Send booking confirmations, lesson reminders, platform updates, policy changes, and support responses.
Improve the Platform — Analyze usage patterns, diagnose technical issues, develop new features, and improve search and matching quality.
Ensure safety — Enforce our Code of Conduct, investigate reports, moderate reviews, and protect users from harmful behavior.
Legal compliance — Meet tax reporting obligations, respond to legal requests, and comply with applicable laws.

How We Share Your Information
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only in the following circumstances:

Other users
Your public profile (name, photo, bio, instruments, styles, reviews, badges) is visible to other users. Instructors see student names, lesson history, and messages. Students see instructor profiles and availability.
Payment processors
Payment card details, billing address, and transaction amounts are shared with our payment processor (e.g., Stripe) to process transactions. We do not store full card numbers.
Background check providers
Instructor name, date of birth, and address are shared for identity verification and criminal background screening. RLGL funds all background checks.
Service providers
Infrastructure providers (hosting, email delivery, video streaming, analytics) process data on our behalf under strict data processing agreements.
Legal authorities
When required by law, subpoena, or court order, or when we believe disclosure is necessary to protect safety, prevent fraud, or enforce our terms.
Business transfers
In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred to the acquiring entity.
We never sell your data
RLGL does not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for their marketing purposes. Period. Our business model is the service fee on lessons, not your data.

Lesson Recordings & Replays
Lessons on RLGL may be recorded to provide replay functionality — a learning tool that lets students revisit instruction, review technique demonstrations, and track their progress.
Mandatory for minors — All lessons involving students under 18 are automatically recorded for safety purposes. This cannot be disabled.
Optional for adults — Adult students and instructors can enable or disable recording per their preferences.
Access — Replays are accessible only to the student and the instructor who participated in the lesson. RLGL staff may access recordings only during active safety investigations or dispute resolution.
Retention — Replays are retained per our standard data retention policy. Students retain access to replays even if the instructor leaves the platform.
No distribution — Lesson recordings may not be downloaded, shared, or distributed outside the Platform. Unauthorized recording or sharing is a violation of our Code of Conduct.

Payment & Financial Data
Financial transactions are processed by third-party payment providers. We collect and store only the information necessary to facilitate payments:
Students — We store a tokenized reference to your payment method (not your full card number), billing address, and transaction history.
Instructors — We store your payout method details (bank account, PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle information) and payout history. A 6% service fee is deducted from each lesson payment.
Tax reporting — We may collect tax identification numbers and issue required tax documents (e.g., 1099 forms) as required by law.

Children's Privacy
RLGL takes children's privacy seriously. We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and related regulations.
Guardian-primary accounts — Students under 18 must have accounts created and managed by a parent or legal guardian. The guardian provides consent and controls the account.
No direct marketing to minors — We do not send marketing communications to accounts identified as belonging to users under 13.
Limited data collection — We collect only the information necessary to provide lessons and ensure safety for minor accounts.
Guardian access — Guardians can review, modify, or delete their child's information at any time by contacting us.

Data Retention
We retain your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide services. Specific retention periods:

After account deletion, we anonymize personal data (name, email, photo) while retaining anonymized transaction records for financial compliance. See Section 8 for how to request deletion.

Your Rights & Choices
You have the following rights regarding your personal information:
Access & portability — Request a copy of all personal data we hold about you in a machine-readable format.
Correction — Update or correct inaccurate information through your dashboard or by contacting us.
Deletion — Request deletion of your account and personal data. We will anonymize your data within 30 days, subject to legal retention requirements.
Communication preferences — Manage notification preferences from your dashboard. You can opt out of non-essential emails at any time. Transactional notifications (booking confirmations, safety alerts) cannot be disabled.
Withdraw consent — Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw it at any time without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing.

Security
We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information:
Encryption in transit (TLS/HTTPS) and at rest for sensitive data
Secure password hashing — we never store passwords in plain text
Role-based access controls for internal systems
Regular security assessments and monitoring
Dual-control authorization for financial adjustments exceeding $200
While we take extensive precautions, no system is completely secure. If you discover a security vulnerability, please report it to security@rlgl.com.

Cookies & Tracking
We use cookies and similar technologies to:
Essential cookies — Keep you logged in, remember preferences, and ensure the Platform functions correctly. These cannot be disabled.
Analytics cookies — Understand how users interact with the Platform so we can improve it. These can be disabled via your browser settings.
We do not use advertising cookies or sell cookie data to ad networks. We do not track you across third-party websites.

Third-Party Services
The Platform may contain links to third-party websites or integrate with external services (social media profiles, payment providers, video conferencing). These services have their own privacy policies that we do not control. We encourage you to review their policies before providing your information.
When you link external profiles (Instagram, YouTube, SoundCloud, etc.) to your RLGL profile, we store only the URL you provide. We do not access or collect data from those platforms on your behalf.

Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes:
We will provide at least 30 days' notice before changes take effect
Notification will be sent via email, in-app notification, and dashboard action card
You will be asked to acknowledge the updated policy via your dashboard
Previous versions will remain available for reference
